PHYAR: Release That Witch
Release That Witch starts with a modern engineer finding himself in the body of Roland Wimbledon, a prince in a medieval-style world where witches actually possess supernatural abilities.
Instead of becoming the usual fantasy hero who solves everything by personally becoming ridiculously powerful, Roland starts applying engineering, science, organisation and modern knowledge to develop the poor territory he has been given.
And that is probably the easiest way to explain why it gets addictive.
You start with a struggling little town and gradually watch everything improve: technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, weapons, politics and the position of witches in society. Magic isn't just there for people to throw fireballs at each other either — Roland constantly finds ways of combining the witches' abilities with engineering and industry.
If you like progression stories where you can actually see a civilisation getting stronger piece by piece, this is dangerous. You keep telling yourself you'll read one more chapter because you just want to see what Roland builds next.
